We have commissioned a considerable amount of specialised joinery, carpentry and cabinetwork from the above over the last year and more. The items requiring manufacture, fitting, adaptation and finishing have ranged in style and complexity, a common characteristic throughout being the requirement that they merge with period pieces and surroundings in a context of period workmanship within the confines of a Grade II listed building. The work has ranged from intricate and delicate work to robust and sizable features, and has covered outdoor items as well as indoor.
Mr. Tyrrell’s understanding of manufacturing, fitting and finishing processes is of a high order, and he completes work with an eye to detail and a sensitivity which is far from the run of the mill. He shows an excellent understanding of different materials, has a natural flair for working in different timbers and is able to procure, fashion and adapt pieces in other materials, notably various metals, in order to suit contiguous woodwork. He is competent in terms of design and drawing, and is skilful in providing finishes which are eminently suitable in surroundings with older surfaces and patina.
He is accurate and quick in terms of machine work, and his workshops are clearly well equipped with specialised as well as standard tools. He does not shy away from new, unfamiliar or demanding work, and is inventive in suggesting solutions for intricate or unobvious challenges.
Although his is a small business, this offers the advantage of prime or total focus on work in hand, ensuring that the customer does not need to deal with the inefficiencies and relegation typical of work undertaken by larger companies. I must say that when I saw how much work was involved in restoring the table I thought it may have been better to take it to the tip and buy a new one. However, after you made us a new table top, in keeping with the Victorian cast iron legs, the table now takes pride of place in our kitchen.
